"The Chasam Sofer's lifespan extended from the Sha'agas Aryeh and the Noda B'Yehudah, whom he knew in his youth, to Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch, whose Horeb he admired." (Chasam Sofer, Commentary on the Torah, Artscroll, p. xvi)
"Rav Yisroel (Salanter) had a great longing to become acquainted with Rabbi Hirsch and to learn his views on the means needed to consolidate traditional Jewry in Russia. He had great respect for the regenerator of German Jewry, and no one else was more deeply convinced of the desperate need of Russian Jewry for such a personality." Rabbi Naftoli Hertz Ehrmann, who arranged a meeting between these two giants in 1876 in Berlin. (2 Giants Speak, p. 6)
Rav Baruch Ber Leibowitz had such awe for R' Yisroel Salanter, who he knew from Kovno, that he would tremble whenever his name was mentioned. (from Artscroll bio on Rav Baruch Ber).

BREAKING: Unfortunately, the draft law passed the first reading today in the Knesset. MK's from Degel Hatorah and Shas initially abstained. They changed their position and voted against after Yesh Atid voted for it. It passed 63-39. The new law, if passed, would set forth an incremental process of drafting Chareidim starting at 40% in 2019, reaching a staggering 70% by 2028, and a goal of 100% by 2038. The military does not need the Charedim. There hasn’t been a war in 45 years and even that one was avoidable. Really Israel has not been attacked in 70 years and that attack was by weaker forces. The draft is because the national religion of the State of Israel is the military. This draft law is all avodah zara and a schmad. You don't need a full draft to fight crime and that's basically what terrorism is. Drafts are for wars against nations.
