Caution

People don't associate Rabbi Avigdor Miller with Torah Im Derech Eretz. Nevertheless, I often see an overlap between TIDE and his outlook along with other Litvish rabbanim such as R' Yaakov Kamenetsky. Their teachings can be useful in working with TIDE in our times.
Rabbi Miller said the following, "Everything that non-Jews say must be taken with utmost caution, because the sheker (falsehood) is much more than the emes (truth)." — The Refutation is at Hand (#2) . So I get two things from this, one is that not everything from the non-Jews is sheker. That point is obvious to some but one often hears talk of the gentile world as if "it's all narishkite" or "it's all emptiness and lies". Of course Chazal tell us that if somebody tells you that gentiles have chochmah believe them. The second point is, as he says, that we need to approach gentile information with caution, with a critical mind. As R' Joseph Soloveitchik observed, Americans are naïve. His statement is as follows:
[Many religious people today]"...act like children and experience religion like children. This is why they accept all types of fanaticism and superstition. Sometimes they are even ready to do things that border on the immoral. They lack the experiential component of religion, and simply substitute obscurantism for it....After all, I come from the ghetto. Yet I have never seen so much naïve and uncritical commitment to people and to ideas as I see in America....All extremism, fanaticism and obscurantism come from a lack of security. A person who is secure cannot be an extremist." From a talk given to social workers, in A Reader's Companion to Ish Ha-Halakhah: Introductory Section, David Shatz, Yeshiva University, Joseph B. Soloveitchik Institute in Wikipedia.org. From a talk to social workers.

So we, who are raised to sit in our little chairs at school and believe everything our teachers tell us, or our doctors, or anybody who assumes authority roles similar to our teachers, must remember to use the mind to size up what we are hearing. This is true especially in these days before Moshiach where the sheker is so thick. This takes mental discipline and we have such a mentally lazy society. So a little German Jewish style self-discipline can go a long way in this effort.

Photos of KAJ All Dressed up for Shavuous

The decorations are beautiful and tasteful as is the shul every day. But what impressed me at least as much was the typical generosity of the people on hand who let me in the building to see the display before Shavuous, offered to turn on the lights for picture taking, and explained to me some of the logistics in the whole production.

How to take Friday night chulent if there is only one chulent - R' Moshe Brody

(Posted with permission) from www.torahimderecheretz.org

How to take Friday night chulent if there is only one chulent: introduction

by R' Moshe Brody

1)    As we have already discussed, there are two ways to read the Mishna[1] (Shabbos 36b) which mentions the requirement of a “blech” on shabbos: either the purpose of the blech is to allow one to keep food on a fire on Shabbos (shehiya), or it is allow one to put the food back on the fire after it was taken off (chazara).
2)    Lihalacha, we pasken that the purpose of the blech is for both-to keep food on the fire on Shabbos, and to take it off and put it back on. Technically, based on this, we should be able to take off a pot from the blech (or crockpot/hotplate), remove the chulent from the pot, and then replace the pot onto the fire to cook until tomorrow (that is-assuming that the food hasn’t cooled down completely in the intervening time). However the matter is not that simple. Let us examine why?
3)    The Gemara (Shabbos 38b) says that one who wants to take off food from a fire must keep the food in their hand and not place it on the ground. The reason, write the Ran and the Rashb”a, is because if a person puts the food on the ground-then that action cancels the original placement of the food on the fire.  If one were to now place it again on the fire, it is called a shehiya lichatchila which is assur on Shabbos because it looks like you are cooking on Shabbos (mechzi kimivashel).
4)    The Gemara then adds the following: when one takes off the food from the fire, one needs to have in mind to put the food back on to the fire.[2] The Gemara discusses whether this requirement is in addition to the first or if one just needs to do either or of these requirements and that would be good enough. Most Poskim follow the lead of the Rif who rules that one needs to do both-have in mind to put it back and keep it in your hand.
5)     If this is the Halacha, then it would be very difficult for one person to singlehandedly take out the chulent being that one would have to keep the pot (or bowl etc.) in their hand, while at the same time, taking out food. This would be exceedingly difficult if the pot or bowl was big, slippery and heavy (unless you pour the whole bowl on its side which may not turn out so goodJ).
6)    Yet although this is the lead of most poskim, the Halacha is not that simple. First of all, there are Rishonim (quoted by the Bais Yosef siman 253:2) that hold that as long as someone has in mind to put back the food on the fire, then even if the pot was put on the floor, being that there are opinions that are maikel in this case, and that the matter is only something which is nogea to a dirabbanan, one may be maikel like the more lenient opinion. Second of all, there are poskim that differentiate between placing the pot on the floor and on a counter or the like. For when someone places the food on a counter, there is not such a hesaich hadas like putting the food on the ground and therefore should be permitted. While this matter is debated in the Rishonim and the Bais Yosef is maikel and only assurs one from putting the food back on the fire if the food was taken off and placed on the floor, other achronim disagree (including the Mishna berura # 55) and assur even if the food was placed on other surfaces. How do we pasken?
7)    The Mishna Berura (Biur Halacha DH vidato, MB # 56, Shaar hatzion #50) holds that if there is a need, and one put it down on a counter or the like, one may put it back if they had in mind to put it back. Likewise, if one never let it out of their hand but did not have in mind to put it back, then it is permissible to put it back.[3]
8)    As is clear from the Mishna Berura, this heter is only bishas hatzorech-not lichatchila. Thus if that is the case-what kind of solutions (except for someone else holding the pot for someone else while they take) are there for one to take chulent out on Friday night?
9)    Rav Moshe (vol. 4 OC 74:33) writes that as long as the pot is in ones hands, even if the pot is sitting on a counter, it is still called “still in your hands” and one may lichatchila return the pot to the fire. Rav Moshe proves this from the fact that the Gemara and the Shulchan Aruch use the language hinicha-(left (the pot)) which implies leaving it there and removing yourself from the vessel, and not hemida (stationed) which could mean even if you are still holding on to the pot. Thus writes Rav Moshe, as long as the food is being held in someone’s hands, even it was placed onto a surface as well-it is ok to return it.[4]
10)                       However Rav Elyashiv is reported (Shevus Yitzchok Shehiya and chazara 14:2) to have been machmir in this case. This is also the opinion of yblch”t  Rav Nissim Karelitz (Shabbos Vol. 2:27:3). However they both write that if the person holding on to the pot picks the pot off the counter, even if the other side of the pot is resting on the counter, one can be maikel and return the pot to the fire for that is called “still in your hands”.
11)                       Limasseh I would say the following: if the pot is not too heavy and/or too hot, one who wishes to take chulent on Friday night off the blech/covered crockpot/hotplate should make sure a) they have in mind to return the pot to the fire that is covered b) the food is hot when it is returned c) the food is completely cooked d) when they take the food they should hold the pot partially leaning on the table so that according to everyone the pot is considered “in your hands still” e) if the pot is too heavy and or too hot-one may be maikel and put the pot down on the counter while still holding the handle or edge of the pot and remove some contents from it and return it to the covered fire.[5]
